  • A Summit County grand jury has issued a three-count indictment against a Massillon man accused of fatally shooting his wife in her Akron hospital room earlier this month.
John Wise, 66, is facing charges of aggravated murder, murder and felonious assault. Each of the charges include firearm specifications that would result in mandatory prison time if Wise is convicted. The aggravated murder charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole.
Wise, who remains jailed on $1 million bond, is expected to be arraigned later this week in Summit County Common Pleas Court.
Wise allegedly shot his critically-ill wife, Barbara Wise, 65, on Aug. 4, at Akron General Medical Center. Barbara had been hospitalized in the intensive care unit for a week after suffering a triple brain aneurysm at the couple’s Hawthorne Avenue NE residence.
Defense attorney Paul Adamson has described the shooting as a mercy killing.
