  • Devlen Neal, the gutteral singer for heavy rock band Tears of Blood, is more than happy to talk about his vocal technique.
“You don’t use your throat, you use your diaphragm. It’s like a whisper and you’re pushing it out, but with this demonic vibration to your voice,” he says, giving a demonstration.
“It’s more like breathing but you add some kind of crunch to it,” lead guitarist Brandon Kaufman says.
Kaufman and rhythm guitarist Justin Angelo, both Tuslaw students, were interested in starting a band when they met Neal at the North Canton Skating Rink.
The guys share a love of aggressive music, with favorites including Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb of God, Megadeth and Black Veil Brides. Spencer Cindia, the band’s quiet drummer, names but one fave: Dave Matthews Band.
Guitarist Klay Krumm says, “I play a lot of different types of music — metal, and I’m in an Eric Clapton tribute band.”
Asked about rocking out on the Palace Theatre stage at the band battle, Kaufman says, “I was pretty amazed we got in. I wouldn’t think I’d be in it.”
