The district has received more 6,100 applications for certified and classified jobs since April 2010. While the applications don't accurately represent the number of applicants – some apply for multiple positions – the figure is indicative of a larger trend.
According to records compiled by the TalentEd online application system used by the district, there have been 4,340 applications submitted for certified positions and 1,829 submitted for classified jobs over the past three years.
“The applications for certified positions were more often than not for teaching positions,” said Jackson Superintendent Christopher DiLoreto said.
DiLoreto noted that around 33 new teachers have been hired for the upcoming school year. None of the teachers were hired for new positions; All were replacing teachers that have retired or resigned.
“We try to hire from within but when you replace those teachers that are retiring orresigning, we have to more than likely hire from outside,” DiLoreto said.
Jackson Local has 642 employees.
All of the applications submitted to Jackson are completed and filed online.
George Woods, district technology facilitator, said the online application system is user-friendly for the applicant and is a good way to manage job postings and applications for the district.
“We anticipate the number of applications to continue at the current level because the system is easy to use," Woods said. "Plus, those applying can elect to get an email notification of future openings."
The online system also helps the district perform human resources operations more efficiently while providing long-term storage and search operations.
“We don’t have a designated human resource director," DiLoreto said. "All of our job openings have been posted online and all applications have been received online since 2010. The online system allows us to work strategically in the hiring process without the added time the traditional paper screening process takes."
While the district receives an adequate number of qualified applicants for most of the teaching jobs, there are a few positions that offer some level of difficulty finding a qualified candidate.
“Finding applicants with the required background for teachers in specialized areas can be challenging," DiLoreto said. "For example, teaching positions for those teaching dual credits for high school and college can be more difficult to fill."
Woods noted that some grade levels and subject areas draw more interest from those seeking careers in education.
“There are just more teachers certified in K-8 than something like high school physics,” Woods said.
Jackson encourages the substitute teachers that have worked with the district to apply for openings.
How does the number of applications received by Jackson Local compare to other districts in the county? Massillon City Schools Superintendent Rik Goodright said his district also uses an online application system called AppliTrack Recruitment.
Page 2 of 2 - “We’ve received around 3,000 applications for certified positions over the past two years,” Goodright said. “The competition for certified positions is steep. We’ve hired around 24 people this year.”
Jenn Brancheau, administrative assistant in the district office at North Canton City Schools said the district also uses the AppliTrack system for their application process.
“Between last summer and this summer, we’ve received 2,333 certified applications," Brancheau said.
