One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the PS4 and the X-Box One has been the release dates. Well half of the picture just came into focus. Sony announced that the PS4 will be available Nov. 15 in the United States and Canada and Nov. 29 in Europe. The news came out of Sony's Gamescom press conference event in Germany. Microsoft held a private meeting with the press which took place at about 4 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. No release date was announced for the X-Box One. The Nov. 15 release date was later than some pundits expected. I think Microsoft may have held off announcing a release date to see where Sony was going to land on the calendar. Everybody has known for a little more than a week that the PS4 release date information was coming. I expect to see the X-Box One hitting shelves in very early November. As much as the X-Box One is tied to Call of Duty, it would be strange to see Ghosts hit shelves before the X-Box One. Machinima had placed the release date for the X-Box One in mid to late November and the guys over at Inside Gaming Daily have been right on the money thus far. We will see if Microsoft is able to create enough wiggle room to get out of the gate first. I think whoever is able to release first may get a little extra media coverage from the mainstream but I don't see the stakes being really higher than that at the end of the day. These consoles will be sold out by time they hit shelves. I don't think either company has to worry about moving any initial launch units. Those will be sold out before they reach retail. Other than that announcements have been light thus far. Microsoft announced a new co-op Fable game and Sony announced some new indi games but I haven't been blown away by anything either of them have done at Gamescom thus far. EA has done some nice stuff and I'll talk about that in another post.
