  • Survey: Construction firms give outlook on 2010

  • The Associated General Contractors of America surveyed 700 construction firms throughout the nation in December and January about the health of the construction industry and of their own companies.
    Here’s how Ohio firms answered the survey’s questions:
    Did you add or lay off employees in 2009?
    Added: 21 percent
    Laid off: 64 percent
    No change: 43 percent
    Do you plan to add or lay off workers in 2010?
    Add: 29 percent
    Lay off: 29 percent
    No Change/Don’t Know: 50 percent
    Has your company been awarded at least one stimulus-funded contract?
    Yes: 29 percent
    No: 71 percent
    Has the stimulus helped you retain staff?
    Yes: 25 percent
    No: 75 percent
    Has the stimulus allowed you to add new staff?
    Yes: 0 percent
    No: 100 percent
    When do you expect the construction market to grow again?
    2010: 14 percent
    2011: 43 percent
    2012: 36 percent
    Later: 7 percent
