- Hurricane Irene was made landfall on Saturday on the East Coast. On Friday, cities along the coast ordered evacuations, including a mandatory evacuation order in parts of New York City, the first time that order has been given. The hurricane prompted the cancellation of flights, the Martin Luther King Memorial ceremony and more.
