  • The Portage Princess tour boat has been cruising the waters of Portage Lakes since Capt. John H Roessner offered his first cruise in 1980. Capt. John originally docked the Portage Princess at the Harbor Inn before moving in 1984 to a private dock at Dusty’s Landing.
He operated out of Dusty’s for four years before Dusty’s owner, Randy Norris, decided to expanded his dock rentals and needed the tour boat space. Randy didn’t leave Capt. John high and dry. He talked with John Thornton to set-up a lease for space on Thornton waterfront property close to the golf course on route 619. The business had been located there ever since.
The Portage Princess offers a historic cruise past picturesque homes in the Portage Lakes with a running narrative by Capt John and his sidekick of six years, Capt. Jack Young.
Tours are available for 1-1-1/2 or 2 hours with a 60 passenger capacity. The boat is fully enclosed with wall to wall windows enabling passengers to enjoy the picturesque view even on a rainy day. The boat is handicap accessible with a bathroom aboard.
A great outing for a family reunion, birthday celebration, or church outing. You can bring your own food but alcohol is not permitted on state waters.
Last year Gail Billings, owner of Southern Gardens Tea Room, approached Capt. John with an idea to provide box lunches for his cruises that has worked well. The Tea Room can provide box lunches delivered to the boat or you may choose to dine at the Tea Room, a short distance down the road, at 497 Portage Lakes Drive before departing for your cruise.
For information on the $22 box lunch/cruise contact Billings at 330-644-8363 or contact Capt. John at 330-499-6891 (office) 330-323-7622 (cell) to check for available cruise dates.
