  • The Lake Local Schools Board of Education elected board member David Poling as the new board president during its regular meeting on June 17.
Poling replaces William Jelen as president who resigned effective May 31.
Jelen announced at the May regular board meeting that he and his wife decided to move to Florida. Derrick Bailey, the current vice president of the board, declined the nomination to president and instead will remain as vice president of the board.
“I appreciate the opportunity but after considering how much time that position takes and my current schedule, I respectively decline and nominate David Poling,” Bailey said.
Thursday, the board will begin its search to find Jelen’s successor.
The board will meet in an executive session at 6 p.m. June 20 at the Board of Education office to consider the four applications received for the vacant seat. It’s unclear if the board will take action at that meeting.
Once selected by the board, the new board member will serve out Jelen’s remaining term which ends December 31.
    STUDENT FEES
Approved student fees for the 2013-2014 school year. The board amended the fee schedule and eliminated the tech fee for all grades and the senior fee.
The fees passed 3 to 1 with Jon Troyer voting no. Troyer stated that with the passage of the pay-to-play in March, the student fees may be putting too high of a burden on families.
All fees will be posted on the district’s website at, www.lakelocal.org during the summer and will be sent out in summer letters. Superintendent Wendorf said while the majority of the fees remain the same as last year, accumulatively, the fees are $70 lower this year.
In other business June 17, the board:
n  Approved handbooks for the high school, middle school, elementary schools, athletics department and student transportation for 2013-2014.
n Approved certified employees, tutors, non-license/non-certified and athletic employees for the 2013-2014 school year, pending that all appropriate credentials are submitted to Lake Local and/or completion of all legal requirements, pupil activity validation and BCI and FBI fingerprinting.
The next regular meeting of the Lake Board of Education is at 7:30 p.m. July 15  in the large instruction group room  at Lake Middle School, 12001 Market Ave., N.
