WHAT IS IT? Orange construction barrels line Walnut Avenue between 12th Street NE and Third Street SE as construction crews begin work on a redesign of Walnut Street in Canton.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW? The city and SARTA have teamed together on a $2.19 million redesign project along Walnut Street. The project is funded with an Ohio Department of Transportation grant. City Engineer Dan Moeglin said the work is one of the city’s complete streets projects and part of efforts to improve the Mahoning Road NE corridor. Plans are to have the project finished by next August.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Walnut Street will be converted to two lanes from its current three lanes. A bicycle lane will be added, and that lane eventually will tie in with other bicycle lanes and trails. Parking will be limited to the west side of the street and be back-in angle spaces. Bus stops and shelters will be installed along the route, intersections are being rebuilt for wheelchair access, and some street lights will be replaced. Central Allied Enterprises is handling the construction and Omni Pro Services is taking care of daily construction inspection.
