The Oxygen channel recently produced a reality show called “All My Babies’ Mamas,” where Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo’s 11 children and their 10 different mothers were featured. Yep, this is true. I couldn’t even begin to make something like that up.
The Oxygen channel recently produced a reality show called “All My Babies’ Mamas,” where Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo’s 11 children and their 10 different mothers were featured.
Yep, this is true. I couldn’t even begin to make something like that up.
There is some good news in this story. The 37-year-old Shawty Lo, whose legal (or in rap circles, government) name is Carlos Walker, will have to find another way to pay his child support. After much public outcry, Oxygen has canceled the series. I guess there is a level of nonsense that TV watchers won’t stoop down to watch.
Mr. Lo’s response is priceless: “Would you rather see us on TV or on welfare?”
No, Mr. Lo, we would rather see you get a vasectomy. You’ve definitely done more than your share to keep the population rising.
When I first read this story, I admit to laughing about the foolishness of it all. However, a conversation with my daughter proved to be much more serious.
Sarrah informed me that a friend of hers had a baby almost six months ago and is in the same position as the women on the show. Her friend is “baby mama” No. 8.
My reaction was shock. What is wrong with these ladies?
That is the most important question in all of this madness. Who in her right mind would willingly have a child or children with a man who has a baseball team-size family already?
It is obvious that Mr. Lo does not believe in safe relations. These days, there are worse things to catch than conception. This guy is a walking, talking petri dish of who knows what.
I can’t imagine dating, let alone marrying, someone who has several children with several women. If a man doesn’t treat his own body and health with any decency, what makes you think he is going to treat you and yours any better?
There simply is no excuse for this type of behavior. Several years ago, The Repository ran stories about a local woman who was either last or next to last in the Shawn Kemp birthing line. She brazenly told our reporter that she was mad that Kemp was being chintzy on his child support payments. Duh, he is the father of a baker’s dozen worth of kids. It’s expensive to pay for all those kids, and I doubt he has a lot of income coming in these days. His basketball career is over. That’s why you don’t have children with someone who already has too many.
Women are expected to think and act better. This is our burden to bear. We are also expected to tell our children, especially our daughters, to respect themselves and their bodies. Inviting a man into our lives who is an incessant breeder is not a wise decision. A man with as many children and as many women as Shawty Lo cannot possibly keep them straight, let alone spend quality time with all of them.
Page 2 of 2 - At what point does the embarrassment kick in? I am embarrassed for the Shawtys and Kemps of the world.
Thankfully, Oxygen listened to the 30,000 people who signed an online petition and decided not to continue production of “All My Babies’ Mamas.” Hopefully, those of you reading this column agree with me. In the words of motivational speaker Susan Powter: Stop the insanity!
