  • Construction season has arrived, according to the orange barrels dotting area roadways.
The Ohio Department of Transportation will spend $48.4 million on 20 road and bridge construction projects on state and federal routes in Stark County this year, agency officials announced Wednesday.
In 2012, ODOT spent $51 million on similar projects in Stark. ODOT has either started work on a dozen projects representing $26.5 million of work or contracted with a construction company for the work. Another $21.9 million of projects will begin later this year.
ODOT will resurface I-77 south of Canton to the county line. The $14.3 million project started recently. A minimum of two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction during peak drive times. Dueber Avenue will close for 75 days.
The project includes repairs to 10 bridges, including two each over Gracemont Street, Downing Road, Prairie Road, Rinker Street and Dueber Avenue over I-77 and Fohl Street over I-77.
Among the projects already underway is a paving and drainage project on Lincoln Way East, from Eden Avenue NW to Woodlawn Avenue NW, in Perry Township. The $2.2 million project closes a gap created by other paving projects. ODOT previously paved east from the Massillon city limits to Eden and west from the Canton city limits to Woodlawn.
Perry Township Trustee Lee Laubacher and State Rep. Kirk Schuring intervened in November when ODOT’s preliminary plans lacked what Laubacher felt was inadequate drainage. As a result, ODOT added eight more catch basins, mostly around Perry Drive.
“It gets the water off of (the road),” he said. “Accidents occur because of the water, and when water is on top of the blacktop, it destroys the road. There haven’t been any catch basins in the area of Perry Drive. ... It’s been neglected and neglected by ODOT.”
