ESPN announced on Friday that the Akron Zips and the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles 2012 Sears BracketBusters contest will air on ESPN2 on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. ET.
The Zips (17-7, 9-1 MAC) and the Golden Eagles (22-5, 14-1 Summit) will face off for the second-consecutive season. Akron defeated ORU 84-80 at Rhodes Arena on Jan. 3, 2011. UA owns a 4-0 record in the series, including a 2-0 road record.
This will be the ninth year for the Zips as a BracketBusters participant (3-5). Akron defeated Creighton 76-67 at Rhodes Arena last season (Feb. 19). UA will appear on TV for the fifth time in the event, the second on ESPN2 (VCU, 2008).
The 10th annual Sears BracketBusters, a three-day men’s college basketball event pitting potential NCAA Championship hopefuls against each other Feb. 17-19, will feature 13 nationally televised games, on either ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN3. The NCAA hopefuls will be selected from a pool of 142 teams from 16 conferences, the largest pool in the event’s history.
The field features teams from 16 conferences: 12 each from Colonial Athletic Association, Mid-American Conference and Southland; 11 each from Ohio Valley Conference and Big South; 10 each from Horizon League, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Missouri Valley and Summit League; nine each from America East, Big Sky and Big West; eight from the Western Athletic Association; four from the Southern Conference; three from the MEAC; and two from the West Coast Conference.
Akron returns to Rhodes Arena for four of its next five games beginning with a TV matchup with Toledo on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. ET. The game will air live on SportsTime Ohio.
