Coventry, Ohio -

It was a hot and humid night as the Coventry Comets opened its season against the visiting Trinity Trojans. Newly painted Coventry bleachers made fans comfortable, unfortunately, the Trojans took advantage of the home team. The game was marred by penalties, fumbles and pass interceptions to cost the Comets a 19-7 loss.

The first quarter saw both teams march up and down the field without much success. Penalty flags flew with unfortunate regularity, causing both teams problems.

The Comets offense, working from a no huddle strategy, kept the Trojans on their guard but was unable to score. Trinity did not really threaten either, despite a golden opportunity when a punt went bad for Coventry.

In the second quarter, Trinity pulled a screen pass that was carried by Devon Blackwell for a 58 yard touchdown. The extra point try failed and Trinity led by 6-0.

Not to be outdone Coventry responded with a pass to Jeff Walker who made an amazing run for a touchdown. The TD was cancelled by a Comet penalty.

Coventry was unable to move the ball and gave up possession to Trinity.

The game seesawed back and forth until late in the quarter. Unfortunately for the Comets, Trinity scored.

Trinity quarterback Alex Nydza threw a pass to Kyle Haire. Haire ran 48 yards for a another touchdown. The extra point try was good and Trinity led 13-0 as the quarter ran out.

If anything, the second half featured more penalties and several key interceptions - all of which hurt the home team. Trinity seized on these and scored another touchdown in the third quarter on a pass by Nydza to Justin Cristman for a 19-0 lead when the extra point failed.

By this stage of the game Coventry had gone to their freshman quarterback Jeff Kuykendall who had an impressive passing game, despite several interceptions. He led the Comets in a drive spearheaded by a 41 yard run by Jeff Walker. This placed Coventry inside the 10-yard line.

Kuykendall then connected on 3rd-and-goal to Ethan Wichterman for a touchdown. The extra point was good and the score stood at 19-7.

That was pretty much the game. The fourth quarter featured both teams driving up and down the field without scoring due to penalties and interceptions.

Coventry had an outstanding goal line stand, proving that the Comets were not about to give up.
Trinity managed to score another touchdown when a punt went bad. However, it was called back on account of roughing the kicker. As the clock ran down Trinity had a chance to score another touchdown but opted instead to run out the clock.

Both teams exhibited moments of great execution but all too often this was negated by penalties and interceptions. Throughout the game the fans were treated to a hard-hitting, exciting game. Each team exhibited great sportsmanship during the course of the evening.
