Here are some more quick hitters from Jackson sports around the town.

Jackson boys attend Arizona State Baseball Clinic
Jackson baseball coach Kevin Miller is still talking about the Arizona State Instructional camp his son Jake and 8th grade teammate Parker Shutey attended in late December in Tempe, Arizona.

“The boys had a great time,” Miller said.  “They were able to work with the coaches and players from Arizona State and play in four or five games.”

The younger Miller and Shutey were part of a Jackson Jaguars travel baseball team that won the 12-U Ohio state championship, and the Cal Ripken Big Kahuna Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, two years ago.

“The camp was open to boys age 13-18,” Miller said. “And there were kids there from all over the country for the three-day camp.”

Jackson hockey team beats Hoover again

The Polar Bear skaters made it a clean sweep of their season series with Hoover Sunday afternoon at Center Ice, beating the Vikings 7-2. Jackson also defeated Hoover 4-2 in mid-December. Alex Royer and Zach Hart each had two goals for Jackson, while goalie Adam Lubic was excellent between the pipes, turning away 25 Hoover shots.

Jackson coach Bill Houmard’s team is 19-7-1 overall and is expected to finish second in the North Coast Hockey League. The NCHL post season tournament will start February 21 with the state tourney in Cincinnati beginning March 5.

Houmard is already looking forward to next season. Houmard’s son Tyler is an 8th grade student at Jackson Middle School and is regarded as one of the top 14-year-old hockey players in Ohio.

“We are waiting to see what options present themselves,” Houmard said. “Tyler will be playing football in the fall and I’m not sure if any Tier 1, AAA organizations will accommodate that schedule.”

The 18U Youngstown Phantoms are scouting the younger Houmard along with the Wooster Oilers. The third option would be to stay in Jackson and skate for his dad’s Polar Bears. In addition to playing football, Houmard is also an excellent baseball prospect. He was a teammate of Jake Miller and Parker Shutey when the Jackson Jaguars won the Cal Ripken Big Kahuna Classic in Myrtle Beach in 2008.

7th grade girls basktball teams are big winners

Jackson’s two 7th grade girls’ basketball teams are putting together outstanding seasons for head coaches Gary Cahoon and Kellyn Richeson. The two teams have a combined record of 18-1 going into this week’s action.

Cahoon’s “gold” team has a perfect 9-0 record. Team members include Savannah Brown, Abby Duffy, Landrie Grace, Jacelyn Litman, Carlie Redpath, Sidney Root, Bailey Schalk and Maddie Stachel.

Richeson’s “purple” squad is 9-1.  Team members are Anna Alkire, Hannah Angelo, Zanya Dayeh, Kelly Headquist, Megan Ludwig, Shannon Sellari, Samantha Snyder, Stephanie Spencer and Alyson Wickemeyer.

Travel basketball teams capture tourney titles

Jackson Youth Basketball Association travel teams brought home three first place trophies at the “Rockin’ The Rim Tournament” January 23-25 in Tallmadge. The 4th, 5th and 6th grade boys “gold” teams were crowned champions in the three day event that featured teams from all over northeastern Ohio.

Jackson bowlers preparing for tournaments

The Jackson boys and girls bowling teams are in the middle of the pack in the latest Federal League standings. Head Coach Jon Mazur’s boys team is 9-3 overall with a 3-3 league record while the girls team is 8-5 for the year and 3-4 in conference action.

The boys and girls sectional tournaments begin Feb. 13. The boys will be at Eastbury Bowling Center in Canton while the girls are scheduled to compete at Park Center Lanes in North Canton.
