Matt Whitney went 2-for-5 with a RBI-double and two-run homer to help propel the Aeros to a 7-1 win over the Curve. Akron jumped out early and never looked back as they got back to the winning side of baseball, lifting their record to 63-40.
Akron 7, Altoona 1
W: Wright (2-1) L: Hankins (1-7) SV: None
Keys to the Game:
Akron Starter Steven Wright had a short but productive outing. He only lasted five innings, but gave up five hits and one run while striking out six to pick up his second win of the season since being called up on June 19.
Catcher Wyatt Toregas also went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in the second inning when the Aeros scored two to give themselves an early 2-0 lead.
Matt LaPorta, who started off on a tear since coming in the C SaC Sabathia trade, struggled at the plate, going 0-5.
Akron relievers Reid Santos and Luis Perdomo both pitched two innings of hitless relief to prevent any type of a comeback from Altoona.
Streaking:
Outfielder Bronson Sardinha extended his hit streak to nine games with a 1-for-3 night with two runs scored.
Tuesday night's win also prevented Akron from having their longest losing streak of the season. The last time Akron lost more than three games was a stretch from August 15-21 in 2007.
Up Next:
Akron will look to even up this rare five-game series with Altoona Wednesday night when Ryan Edell (5-6, 4.18 ERA) goes to the mound to face off against Altoona's Luis Munoz (1-4, 8.37 ERA). The game will be at 7:05 and broadcasted on 1350 AM and on akronaeros.com.
Suburbanite Reader's Appreciation Week:
The Aeros and The Suburbanite will have their second Reader's Appreciation night August 17. Readers can get tickets for $5 by mailing in the form found in the Suburbanite newspaper to the Akron Aeros.
