Outfielder Ryan Goleski put three big insurance runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning when he launched a three-run home run to help Akron defeat Altoona 5-1. With Erie scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth against Harrisburg to win 4-3, the Aeros magic number is now one.
Tuesday
Akron 5, Altoona 1
W: Martin (11-3) L: Hankins (1-11) SV: None
Keys to the Game:
Akron starter J.D. Martin shut down Altoona's offense, going six innings and allowing one run on five hits. Martin struck out two and walked two.
The Akron relief core of Erik Stiller, Tony Sipp and Scott Roehl followed Martin's performance up with three more innings of near perfect relief. They allowed only one hit and did not walk a batter, striking out four combined.
Goleski's home run came in his lone plate appearance of the game, as he replaced Stephen Head who had gone 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Bronson Sardinha had a solid night for the Aeros, going 3-for-5 and scoring two runs.
Roster Moves:
Catcher Wyatt Toregas was activated from the DL. He missed 11 games with left elbow inflammation. The Aeros were 3-8 while he was injured, showing that his .301 average, 11 home runs and 34 RBIs in 42 games were greatly missed. He had started the season in Buffalo.
