Former Coventry Wave softball player Janie Linger will continue her athletic and academic career at Hiram College. Linger, a product of the Coventry youth softball program, committed to play for the Terriers and head coach Kristin Tassey.

Linger, who is a senior at Akron Firestone High School and the Falcons top pitcher and hitter, is expected to play third base for the Terriers.

“Janie is an outstanding young lady and a solid softball player,” said Hiram College Director of Athletics Tom Mulligan. “We are thrilled that she has committed to be a member of our program.”

Linger played for the Wave and head coach Dan Miller during the summer of 2010 and moved up through the Coventry youth leagues before deciding to attend Firestone High School.

Hiram is currently 18-9 and 7-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, tied for first place with the Big Red of Denison University. Tassey has built the Hiram program into one of the best in the NCAC. Since coming to Hiram in 2006, Tassey has a record of 87-67 overall. In her first season as head coach, Tassey led her team to a 22-14 record. Her team’s 22 wins were a school record at the time. The Terriers also made their first-ever appearance in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Following the season, Tassey became the first softball coach at Hiram to earn the NCAC “Coach-of-the-Year” Award. In 2009, Hiram broke its previous season win record with 27 victories, including winning the program's first ever NCAC Tournament Championship and a first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

“One of our graduates saw Janie play last spring and recommended her to our coach,” said Mulligan. “We watched her play a few high school games and during the summer leagues and felt that she could be an outstanding player for our program. She is an excellent fit for Hiram and we look forward to her joining our community.”
Linger intends to pursue a career as a dentist.
