Despite not being able to fill five weight classes, Manchester made a strong showing at the Madison Coke Classic wrestling tournament at Madison High School in Mansfield, scoring 200 points for a 5th-place finish.

Clearfork won the event with 265.4 points, while Upper Sandusky took runners-up honors with 246.9.

The Panthers crowned three individual champions at the tournament: freshman Joey Bowen (106 pounds), sophomore Drew Brasiel (145) and junior Jake Hanzel (285).

Hanzel led the team with a 5-0 record with five pins, all in the first period.

Brasiel and Bowen also posted unblemished marks. Brasiel was 5-0, while Bowen was 4-0.

Sophomore Bobby Bowen (120) and senior Mitch Stutler (182) also placed in the tournament. Both went 3-1 and took 3rd place. Sophomore Dylan Rediger (132) and senior Adam Zechman (152) earned 6th-place honors.

“Overall, our wrestlers competed well,” said head coach James Easterling. “They all wrestled aggressively and earned a lot of bonus points. We had contributions from the entire team, and I was proud of their efforts. Due to few guys out of the line up, it became a numbers game keeping us out of the team race, but that did not stop our young men from competing hard.

“I felt our captains Bobby (Bowen), Drew (Brasiel) and Jake (Hanzel) led our young team very well early on, and it shows in the effort we are seeing.”
