The perennial power that is Jackson soccer added one more player to the college ranks when Joey Dennis agreed to continue playing this fall for Hiram College.

Dennis was a four-year letter winner, two-year starter and a team captain his senior season for the Polar Bears. He will continue to play outside back and mid along with defense for the Terriers’ coach Carl Capellas.

Education wise, Dennis will study engineering, where he plans to do a 3.5 year program at Hiram before finishing the degree with two years at the University of Akron.

“I visited there, and the coach was always nice to me,” Dennis said. “And I’m going to study what I want to do.”

The turf stadium was another big plus when it came to the soccer side of things, which will be a plus in the always fickle Ohio weather.

Looking back at his time at Jackson High School, Dennis said he will be taking away good study habits and he felt the school taught him well in preparation for college.

On the soccer field, Dennis said that coach Michael Biros taught him to be a good person both on and off the field and to appreciate things.

There was plenty to appreciate with having won the Federal League during all four years while he was at school, along with reaching a Top 10 state ranking. Individually, Dennis was a 1st Team All-Federal League selection along with an All-County selection.

Dennis wlll join Brian Zilla, a former Jackson soccer standout, at Hiram. Zilla was a 2010 graduate of Jackson and plays defense for the Terriers. Other local players include Brian Todd of Green and Taylor Kiefer of Hoover.

“I am very pleased to see Joey attend Hiram College,” said Biros. “We will miss his ability and leadership. The success of the soccer program at Jackson is attributed to the dedication to the sport and our team. Joey is a glowing example of this.  He will be a great fit at Hiram.  I am excited to see him play at the next level.”

Dennis also thanked his parents, Joe and Laurie, and the other coaches on the Jackson staff. He also thanked Mike Balardi, son of teammate Danny Balardi, who was an influence on his game over the years.
