The Panthers’ regular wrestling season is winding down as they get set to open tournament action Feb. 15-16 at the Rootstown Division III Sectionals.

The Panthers, who were competing at the PAC-7 championships last weekend at Fairless, are hoping history repeats itself to defend last year’s sectional title.

Kyle Ferguson (120) and junior Bobby Bowen (106) were sectional champs, and Manchester qualified nine wrestlers to the districts — a school record.

Ferguson has since graduated, but Bobby Bowen will look to defend his title after moving up to the 113-pound weight class.

Other returning district qualifiers are junior Jake Hanzel (285),sophomore  Drew Brasiel (138) and sophomore Dylan Rediger (126).

“We are starting to see some of our wrestlers begin to mature and get ready for the sectionals,” said head coach James Easterling.

At the West Holmes Marine Corps Invitational, the Panthers crowned three individual champions, led by freshman Joey Bowen (106 pounds), Bobby Bowen (113) and Hanzel (285). Both Bowens won their brackets with 4-0 marks, while Hanzel went 3-0.

Also faring well at the event were Brasiel, Brayden Kirk (106), Paul Dies (152), Rediger (126), Brett Thomas (160) and Issac Highman (170).

“With illness still keeping a couple of our wrestlers from competing, we took 11 (wrestlers), nine team scorers and two extras,” Easterling said. “By the end of the day we had nine placing with three champions. We finished sixth, a good position given the fact that we didn't have a full line-up. I was very pleased with our effort.”

The Panthers also hosted a region 20A quarterfinal match against Jackson Milton on Jan. 23, losing 40-26.

“We lost based on self-inflicted mistakes as well as some unavoidable obstacles,” Easterling said, referring to missed opportunities and three sick wrestlers.

Manchester closed out its recent activity at the Bill Dies Memorial Tournament at Akron Firestone High School.

Hanzel was the team’s top finisher and placed third in the heavyweight class. Joey Bowen (106) was seventh.
