Reigning OHSAA Division I state champ wins by nine strokes and qualifies for Junior PGA Championship in Kentucky

Green High School’s Maxwell Moldovan ran away with the Northern Ohio Junior PGA Sectional Championship on Tuesday at Shady Hollow Country Club in Jackson Twp.

Moldovan, a junior-to-be at Green and the reigning Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I state champion, fired a final-round 67 to finish at 9-under for the two-day tournament. No other golfer in the field was better than even.

After shooting a 4-under 68 on Monday, Moldovan did himself one better by finishing 5-under on Tuesday. He totaled eight birdies on the day to offset one bogey and one double bogey.

Moldovan qualifies for the Junior PGA Championship July 31-Aug. 3 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. Also qualifying for the event were Bay Village’s Jacob Tarkany and Avon Lake’s Andrew Kaye, who tied for second with even-par 144s.

Moldovan’s former high school teammate, recent Green graduate Miles DeMuesy, fired a 4-under 68 on Tuesday and finished a stroke behind Tarkany and Kaye in a tie for fourth with Columbiana’s Jared Wilson. DeMuesy’s 68 trailed only Moldovan for round of the day.

Other locals in the top 10 included Jackson High School’s Andrew Wyss in a tie for seventh with a 6-over 150 and Canal Fulton’s Aaron Apticar in a tie for 10th with an 8-over 152.
