CANTON  Nine Malone University cross country runners, including two former Lake High School standouts, have been recognized as NCAA Division II All-Academic by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Seniors Jade Smith and Laura Tweedie were among those honored and the former Lake teammates received recognition for the USTFCCCA individual honor, which recognizes athletes with at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA who finished in the top 30 percent of eligible runners at his/her respective NCAA Regional meet and/or the top half of the field at the NCAA National Championships.

The duo was also part of the Pioneer men's and women's squads both receiving the NCAA Division II All-Academic Team distinction, which goes to squads with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA who scored at a regional meet.

Three other members of the Pioneer women's squad received the individual All-Academic Award including Hannah Campbell (Sr., River Valley H.S.) and Rachel Wentworth (So., Garaway H.S.). Overall, the quintet helped pace the Malone women to a sixth-place finish at the Div. II Midwest Regional Championships in November.

For the men’s team, which placed seventh at the Midwest Regional meet, five runners earned individual honors, while four members of the women’s team were recognized as the Pioneers compiled an impressive 3.52 team GPA while the men boasted a 3.04 cumulative grade point average.
