CANTON Malone junior Melanie Smith (Lake) was one of three members of the Malone University women’s golf team Great Midwest Athletic Conference All-Conference honors.
Smith received her award by finishing among the top five at the conference championships, while seniors Kaitlyn Brant and Mikayla Johnson were selected for two of the final five all-conference spots following a vote of the league’s coaches earlier this week.
Smith, a Hartville native, finished in the top 10 in eight different events this year while carding an average of 86.6. She was named the G-MAC’s Women’s Golf Athlete of the Month for October after a month in which she placed in the top three at the Mercyhurst University Rossin Memorial, Ohio Valley University Woodridge Open and Phipps Memorial tournament.
Her strong campaign continued as the calendar flipped over to the spring season, winning the G-MAC Athlete of the Week Award in late March after a fourth-place showing at the Ursuline College Invitational. Smith then capped her campaign with her fourth-place result at the conference championship meet.
At the conference tournament, Malone finished second overall thanks to Smith, Bryant and Johnson’s strong play. Over the course of the season, the Pioneers placed in the top three in nine of the 10 events in which they participated.
