State Representative Todd Snitchler (R – Uniontown) sent a letter to Massillon Mayor Francis Cicchinelli today concerning the proposed annexation of the Bit of Eden mobile home park and contiguous Tuslaw Local School District property into the City of Massillon. While the contemplated annexation appears to be permitted under current law, Rep. Snitchler’s letter urges the mayor to reconsider the practice of annexation as currently being utilized by the City of Massillon.

Governor Applauds Recovery Act Investments to Enhance Digital Infrastructure, Create Jobs in Rural Ohio

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland today congratulated five Ohio broadband projects that received $14.4 million in broadband infrastructure funding by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The awards help to create jobs in seven rural counties and extend broadband service to rural areas.

The U.S. Department of Treasury today announced the approval of the Ohio Hardest-Hit Fund plan. The Ohio Housing Finance Agency will use the allocation of $172 million in federal foreclosure prevention funding to help families struggling to pay their mortgages.

The Cleveland Browns are once again teaming up with the American Red Cross and American Sickle Cell Anemia Association to host the 10th Annual Dr. Charles Drew Blood Drive. The blood drive is scheduled for Saturday, July 31, from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Browns Training Camp in Berea at Baldwin-Wallace College, behind the Kleist Center for Art and Drama. Browns fans are encouraged to come out and donate blood to help boost the local supply.

New president of the Ohio State Bar Association sworn in for duty

On Monday, June 21, Summit County Council and Attorney General Richard Cordray presented longtime attorney Carmen Roberto with official commendations for his years of service to the community and his new role as president of the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA). Roberto was selected to become the new president of the OSBA at the organization's May 6 annual convention in Dayton. He will officially take over his new duties effective July 1.

OHSAA awards high school football finals to both Stark County and Columbus

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors today voted to award both Stark County and Columbus the opportunity to host the state football finals for two years each beginning with the 2012 season. The vote took place during a special Board conference call meeting and was in response to a recommendation from an 11-person state football finals subcommittee.

Connect Ohio residential technology assessment reports 66 percent of Ohio residents now subscribe to broadband

More Ohioans own a computer and subscribe to broadband service than last year, according to Connect Ohio’s 2010 statewide Residential Technology Assessment released Friday. With two-thirds of Ohio residents subscribing to broadband, Ohio ranks higher than the national average of 60 percent of adults who have high-speed Internet service in their home.

Some sex offenders to be removed from Ohio registery soon

As directed by the Ohio Supreme Court, the Ohio’s Attorney General’s Office has begun to remove people from the sex offender registry who no longer have to register as sex offenders. The Attorney General’s Ofice will contact them as they are removed from the registry.

Officer Miktarian’s killer sentenced to death

Sherri Bevan Walsh announced today that Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer sentenced Ashford Lamar Thompson, 25, of Twinsburg, to death for killing Twinsburg Police Officer Josh Miktarian. 
On June 11, a Summit County jury recommended the death penalty to the judge after finding Thompson guilty earlier in the month of the Aggravated Murder of Officer Miktarian.

Governor Strickland issues executive order on expanding health care access for young people

A new Ohio law spearheaded by Governor Ted Strickland will take effect on July 1 requiring insurance companies to offer policyholders the option to add or keep unmarried children on their insurance policies up to age 28 for an additional fee.
