There is a group of energetic people in Jackson Township who are helping others. This chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) was formed in early 1982. Currently the group has 60 members who enjoy the camaraderie with other area seniors.
AARP chapters are encouraged to maximize member engagement in a broad menu of community service, information, educational activities and experiences. This include adding value for members by providing opportunities for self-realization, personal growth and life-enriching fellowship and support. This is all to demonstrate the contributions and potential of older Americans, encouraging their full participation in contemporary life and stimulating public interest in their issues.
The members of the Jackson chapter hold an annual community service day where they visit a local nursing facility, have a craft, and play bingo with the residents. They provide the bingo prizes and the visit provides a rewarding experience for all.
The group donates to the Hunger Task Force and collects eyeglasses for the Lions Club. They also facilitate a recycling program for unused cell phones and empty inkjet cartridges. These members of AARP chapter 3541 do represent the AARP motto completely, “the power to make it better” and “to serve, not be served.”
Meeting every third Thursday of each month, Jackson AARP enjoys a catered lunch and informative and interesting speakers such as the safety services, judges and other public figures. The group enjoys a variety of entertainment such as singers, dancers and musical programs.
These fun citizens have been known to have a Hawaiian luau and they all “dress the part." They often have themed meetings including Mickey Mouse Day, hearts for Valentines and green for St. Patrick’s Day. The fun does not stop there. They take several fun day-trips and tours each year.
The members of the Jackson AARP welcome new members and encourage everyone to visit. The meetings are held at St. John Lutheran Church, 1900 Wales Ave, Massillon. You can visit up to three times before joining the local group. Annual dues are $7 and you need to be a member of national AARP.
