Mel Herncane, a retired Jackson High School history teacher, found a hero in the eighth-grade U.S. history teacher who taught him in Massillon decades ago. Herncane recognized his hero at the high school Saturday during the opening ceremony for the Field of Honor/Field of Heroes — a display of 1,300 flags at the Jackson Township Safety Center. About 80 people gathered in the high school auditorium to offer thanks to educators and veterans through musical performances and speeches.
The Stark County Board of Elections on Friday certified the final vote counts for all May 7 contests and none of the outcomes will change.

Heath Warner Memorial run is partnered with this weekend’s second-annual Field of Honor/Field of Heroes event at the Jackson Township Safety Center, where community members can purchase flags staked in the lawn to recognize their own heroes — living or deceased. Both the race and opening ceremonies for the field are Saturday morning.
