Fire was contained in the tank of an oil well explosion Sunday night at 8704 Knox-School Road in West Township, Coumbiana County, six miles east of Minerva.

“I just talked to a Youngstown representative of Atlas Gas, who owns the well, and they’ll be out there this morning along with Stark County HAZMAT, the EMA ( Columbiana County Emergency Management Agency) and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency),” said Fire Chief Aaron Stoller of the Sandy Creek Joint Fire District. “We were out there about two hours last night after a nearby resident called at 8:29.”

Stoller reiterated that there were no injuries to area residents or firefighters.

“It was out there between the township administration building and a private residence,” he said. “It blew the lid about 500 feet into the yard next door.”

A Class B foam was used to extinguish the fire inside the tank of crude oil.

Assisting at the scene were the North Georgetown  and Homeworth Fire Departments.
