John Edwards was found not guilty on one count Thursday in his corruption trial, but a mistrail was declared on the other five counts after jurors couldn't reach a concensus. Jurors deliberated for nine days in the case against Edwards, in which he faced charges stemming from using campaign contributions to pay off his mistress to hide his affair. The charge he was found not guilty on Thursday was the count of accepting illegal contributions from Rachel "Bunny" Mellon during his presidential campaign in 2008.

After initially telling the judge Thursday that they couldn't agree on the five charges, Judge Catherine Eagles sent the jurors back to deliberate. About two hours later, they were still deadlocked.

Edwards ran for president in 2004 (eventually becoming the vice presidential nominee) and 2008. Before that he served as a U.S. senator from North Carolina.
