Members of a recently-formed charity plan to provide extras for the Jackson Local Schools district.

The aptly named Jackson Local Schools Foundation is on a mission to raise $100,000 in donations by the end of the year — the first step in what will be a continuing fundraising campaign.

“Many school systems across the country have had these foundations in place for years,” said foundation President Chris Holding, who is a senior vice president at Timken Co.

Holding said Jackson Superintendent Chris DiLoreto and his predecessor, Cheryl Haschak, had put together committees to study possible funding sources last year, aside from traditional taxes.

“A superior school system benefits everybody,” Holding said.

The idea came out of those discussions, and the non-profit foundation was incorporated in October. So far, it has taken in about $10,000, but plans to step up efforts this fall.

“We want to start writing checks,” said Holding, one of the 13 members of the board of directors.

Foundation money will be made available for special projects, scholarships and grants, designed to enhance the core curriculum.

The charity is registered for matching gifts with the Timken Co., J.M. Smucker and JPMorgan Chase. Anyone wishing to donate can call the foundation at 330-737-1308.
