The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority said it set a one-day ridership record of 11,331 riders Sept. 4.

SARTA’s executive director, Kirt Conrad, said the old record was about 11,050 on a day in October 2011.

He said ridership is up about 9 percent this year and that SARTA is set to break last year’s one-year ridership record of 2.5 million by about 200,000 riders for this year.

Conrad speculates that the ridership increases are due to higher fuel prices, an improving economy where more people are commuting on the bus to jobs and route changes that have attracted more riders, such as modified service to Massillon Place.
