Cascade Locks Park Association’s (CLPA) is holding its fourth annual Canal Day Arts Festival and Duck Derby, June 30, from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. at the Schumacher Cascade Mills Site, across North Street from the historic Mustill store. Admission is free.

About 40 local artists and several food vendors will be on hand to feed hungry souls and stomachs. Musicians will play throughout the festival. Kids may enjoy numerous attractions designed for them, including face painting and a Lego-like building center. The Mustill store will be open for tours and business.

Racing ducks are $5 each or 5 ducks for $20. Prizes will be awarded for those who place in the top ten. The last place finisher will also get a price. Ducks for the 50/50 Race, in which the winner gets half the pot, are $10 each.

Ducks can be purchased in person or online at www.cascadelocks.org. and at the event.

This year, Canal Days is featuring award-winning magician Michael Griffin who will not only put on astounding magic shows during the festival (think needles poking through his face), but will end the event with a death-defying grand finale. Griffin, who says he has broken Houdini’s code, will be bound with chains, gagged and dropped into the Ohio-Erie Canal by crane. Paramedics will be on standby in case Griffin fails to surface. Since Griffin signed on to appear at Canal Days, he’s been calling himself Houducki in the fun spirit of the day.

“That duck is going down,” Griffin said.
