Ray Bradbury, the popular writer best known for his works "Fahrenheit 451," "The Martian Chronicles," "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and "The Illustrated Man," died Tuesday, his daughter said today. Bradbury was one of the most celebrated American novelists of the 20th century, and his influence on science fiction and speculative fiction is felt today. An award presented by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America bears his name.
Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Ill., on Aug. 22, 1920, and died in Los Angeles. He leaves behind more than 10 novels, countless short stories, plays, television and movie scripts, and children's books. Bradbury received many awards throughout his distinguished career, including the National Medal of Arts (presented by President George W. Bush in 2004), an Emmy Award in 1994 (for the screenplay of "The Halloween Tree") and a special Pulitzer citation in 2007.
