Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) enthusiasts that have an interest in learning more about the park and sharing it with others can become a Park Ambassador volunteer. Park Ambassador volunteers have direct and regular interaction with park visitors through formal and informal talks and presentations.

People interested in becoming involved and volunteering with one of the different volunteer groups are invited to a training session at Happy Days Lodge, on Feb. 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Volunteer applications will be available at each event. Happy Days Lodge is located at 500 West Streetsboro Road in Peninsula, Ohio, 44264.

Various types of volunteer opportunities include:

Visitor Center Assistants (Hunt Farm & Peninsula Depot): Assist park rangers with operation of visitor centers, including greeting visitors, providing information/ orientation, operating radios, and completing bookstore sales, and provide First Aid/CPR when needed.

SET Team (Special Event Team): Assist rangers with on-site special events, including directing traffic flow in the parking lot, taking tickets and operating the cash box, or serving refreshments.

Park Promoters: Promote CVNP and the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park at on-site and off-site special events.

Conservancy Store Volunteers in Peninsula or Boston: Assist retail staff in the operation of the stores by providing excellent customer service, stocking inventory, and maintaining a clean, safe store environment.

Speaker’s Bureau: Present a scripted program about CVNP and its park partners to various organizations, clubs, and groups.

Hike Assistants: Assist park rangers on park guided hikes or programs. Hike Assistants will hike outdoors in varying degrees of temperature and will wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Volunteer may carry up to 10 lbs. of equipment.

Wildlife Watchers: Volunteer has direct contact with park visitors by providing informal interpretation about park resources, including bald eagles, bats, and beavers.

Farmers’ Market Volunteers: Surround yourself with fresh and local foods by volunteering in many opportunities at the Farmers’ Market, including parking assistance, staffing the information table, setting-up and tearing-down, taking photographs of market activities, and assisting chefs with cooking demonstrations.

Historical Artisan: Share informal interpretation on historical demonstration or by engaging visitors through a variety of newly prepared activities that are both stimulating and educational.

Invader Persuaders: Rove at the Invasive Persuader Stations providing informal interpretation about invasive plants.

Paw Patrol: Provide an opportunity for park visitors to learn more about CVNP and the opportunities that canine companions can have along the trails. Paw Patrol helps provide a unique visitor experience and an opportunity to make contact with a well-behaved and trained canine volunteer and their owner.

Park Ambassadors are here to help visitors experience this national park to the fullest. Volunteers must have the ability to start conversation and advocate for the park and park partners; have strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills and comfort with public speaking. Individuals must be able to stand for extended periods of time and have some availability on weekends and holidays and preferably commit two to eight hours per month. Interpretation, First Aid/CPR, and position specific training is provided.
