Water was seeping up through 25th Street NW near the back wing of the turn arrow in the foreground, making Fulton Road wet and slippery Thursday morning. Canton Water Department crews began arriving at the scene a little past 8 a.m. and closed 25th Street.

Early morning blasts of snow and wind knocked down a few branches across the county and resulted in several fender-benders early Thursday morning, but no serious injuries or major damage were reported.

The National Weather Service’s Wind Advisory, which included Stark, Holmes and Wayne counties, expired at 7 a.m. but the potential for intense bursts of snow remained throughout the morning.

“Much of the snow will be light, but bursts of heavier snow will reduce visibility and produce a quick coating of snow. Untreated roads could get slippery,” the weather service said on its website.

The temperature, which had already reached the predicted daytime high of 27 degrees, was expected to fall throughout the day.

At 8 a.m., it was 27 degrees with winds out of the west at 33 mph and gusts to 43 mph at Akron Canton Airport.

Despite the bursts of snow, the weather service said that total daytime accumulation was expected to be less than one-half inch, according to the website.

Temperatures had been unseasonably warm Tuesday and Wednesday.

But wintry conditions returned by Thursday morning.

ROAD CONDITIONS

Salt-and-plow trucks were already scouring the county, trying to ensure the highways were not slippery.

Still, drivers slid into one another and off the roads.

Troopers with the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Canton post were on the scene of between eight and a dozen car crashes by 8 a.m., dispatchers said. None of the crashes appeared to involve life-threatening injuries.

Canton police were also on the scene of crashes at Cleveland Avenue and 22nd Street NW and at the 3000 block of Market Avenue N, but officers said no life-threatening injuries were reported.

City workers were busy repairing a water main break that occurred at Fulton Road NW and 25th Street, which was closed shortly after 8 a.m.

Terry Boylan, distribution supervisor for the city’s water department, said the break in the 6-inch water main was reported about 6 a.m.

The weather service forecast  predicts an overnight low Thursday of 11 degrees with wind chill values as low as 4 degrees below zero, the website said.
