The Stark County Jail, which has been nearly half empty since layoffs in 2010, will begin accepting more inmates next week.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Michael McDonald, who oversees the jail, said Friday that the jail’s inmate population will be increased from 300 to 400 beginning Tuesday.

The sheriff reduced the inmate population in December 2010 when he laid off 41 employees in anticipation of 2011 budget cuts. The layoff left the sheriff without enough staff to guard the then-501 inmates.

Due to the passage of the 0.5 percent sales tax in November, commissioners allocated additional money to the sheriff’s office so it could recall laid off employees and rehire new ones to replace those that did not return.

McDonald said the goal is to return the jail to full capacity by the end of the year.
