The Tadmor Shrine Center is hosting its fifth annual “Friendly Haunted House for Children” every weekend through Oct. 28. The haunted house, designed for kids 12 and under, is more friendly than spooky and geared for the whole family.

“We did not want to make this bad gory stuff, because kids do get frightened at this age,” said Don Corbett, secretary of the Canton-Massillon Shriners Club.

The Shrine Center needed a fundraiser to help support its free hospital transportation for kids program and decided to start the haunted house.

“It was six years ago that Bud McMann and a group of us designed and built the house,” Corbett said. “It was Bud's dream to create this kid-friendly haunted house.”

McMann passed away after the haunted house’s second year. Today, his sons Chris and Terry continue to make his dream a reality.

Those visiting the haunted house will be picked up in the parking lot and taken to the entrance by the police patty wagon the Shriners use in local parades. Inside, the house is a maze of rooms that include the spider room, the swamp and an ape that blows bubbles and plays music. Kids enter the maze through a rotating pumpkin.

After the walk through, children can hear a story from a story teller, watch a juggler and take a hayride into the haunted woods — all included with a haunted house ticket.

Families can go through the house as many times as they like. Each child receives a coloring book for attending and food is available for purchase. The non-profit group, Guardians Advocating Child Safety (GASP) will be there Saturdays during the event to figure print and ID children.

“We are Shriners, all we do is take care of kids,” Corbett said.

Corbett said they take safety very seriously when it comes to the haunted house project. All volunteers must sign in and show identification and the walls are hand painted with fire-resistant paint.

“We are secure and do everything possible to make this family event safe,” Corbett said.

Shriners support 23 hospitals in the United States and Puerto Rico, where treatment is free for children. Area Shriners take children, free of charge, to the hospitals in Erie, Pennsylvania and Cincinnati. Volunteers from Summit, Stark and Portage county clubs hold fundraisers like the haunted house to support those efforts. The Tadmor Shrine Center is home to the clubs from those counties. Ten percent of what they earn goes to the hospitals and 90 percent stays to help local children.

The event will run on Friday, Saturday and Sundays through October 28. Friday hours are 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Haunted House is located at 3000 Krebs Drive. Cost is $10 per person. Visit www.hallowfun.org, for a $1 off coupon. For more information call 330-644-8494.
