Director of 'Bully' documentary to speak Monday

The acclaimed documentary film, “Bully,” opens locally today at Movies 10.

On Monday, the movie’s director, Lee Hirsch, will visit Kent State University Stark campus share his personal story and those behind his award-winning movie that follows five kids and families over the course of a school year. Stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus.

Viewers spend a year in the lives of students and parents who contend with bullying on a daily basis are given an intimate glimpse into the effects bullying has on their families and their developing sense of self-worth.

Hirsch also is the founder, director, and producer of the Local Voices for Obama project, a series of ads featuring supporters of President Obama. His ads garnered him several 2009 Reed Awards, including Best Presidential Ad and Best Independent Expenditure.

According to the Greater Talent Network, Hirsch will speak about bullying and how it affects students, their families, the schools and society at large.

He will talk about filming in Georgia, Mississippi and Oklahoma and his unlimited access in two schools in Sioux City, Iowa.

He will discuss his ideas behind “Bully,” what the process was like filming moments of bullying as they were happening and what he hopes the film will achieve.
