A 15-year-old township boy is dead and two other teens were taken to an area hospital after an early morning boating incident Saturday.

Preliminary results of an investigation by Stark County Coroner P.S. Murthy’s Office indicated that Alex Campbell, 15, of the Clinton area, died of an accidental drowning, said Rick Walters, coroner’s office investigator.

Dive teams from two counties searched for the teen before they were able to find him more than three hours after he was last seen about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the lake behind the 9000 block Paulding Street NW. Paulding is the northwestern corner of the township.

He was found a couple hundred feet out into the water about 5 a.m., Walters confirmed.

He and two other boys, ages 15 and 17, were in a boat on the water when the incident occurred, he said.

Details of what happened were not yet available as township police continued to investigate the incident.

Information about the boys taken to Affinity Hospital also was not yet available. But their conditions were described as not life-threatening.

Township firefighters were assisted by firefighters and dive teams from Coventry and Canton townships, Franklin and Green fire departments.
