Passenger traffic hit a new August high with 169,079 passengers flying in and out of Akron-Canton Airport. The numbers are up 10 percent over August 2011.

August’s record also marks the 17th consecutive monthly record. Year-to-date passenger traffic is up 11 percent compared to the first eight months of 2011.

Rick McQueen, the airport’s president and chief executive officer, said with the addition of Southwest Airlines and extra flights offered by Delta and US Airways, he expects “to continue breaking monthly records well into 2013.”

Passenger traffic was up on all airlines serving the airport. AirTran Airways (now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southwest Airlines) offering nonstop service to Orlando, Tampa, Ft. Myers, Atlanta, New York, and Boston increased 2 percent compared to August 2011, carrying 72,339 total passengers.

Southwest Airlines, which started service on Aug. 12 with nonstop service to Chicago Midway and Denver, carried 10,435 passengers.

US Airways, with flights to Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. (Reagan), increased by 17 percent.

Frontier Airlines, flying nonstop to Denver, was up 11 percent compared to last year.

United, with flights to Chicago O’Hare and Delta, flying to Atlanta and Detroit, were up 11 percent and 5 percent respectively.
