Veterans say a major hurdle in searching for jobs is getting employers to understand how combat duties like checking for land mines develop leadership and other skills useful in civilian jobs.

President Barack Obama and others have called on businesses to hire veterans. But there was a 10 percent unemployment rate reported in November for those who served in active duty at any time since 2001. The comparable rate for non-veterans was 7.2 percent.

Those who interview veterans for civilian jobs say lack of communication and training on both sides of the process can be a problem.

Federal officials realizing the need to prepare service members more for switching to civilian life have revamped the military program providing that assistance.
