If you’re confused, or just not paying attention, Ohio plans to hold two primary elections next year.
The first is March 6. The deadline to enter a race as a party candidate for county elected offices, Ohio House seats, Ohio Supreme Court and U.S. Senate was 4 p.m. Wednesday, when nominating petitions were due at elections offices. It also was the deadline to place issues, such as tax levies, on the ballot.
The second primary is June 12. That date is for presidential and congressional candidates only. And they aren’t required to file for candidacy until next year, though Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, the chief elections official, had recommended congressional hopefuls meet Wednesday’s filing deadline, too.
Puzzled yet? It could get worse. There’s still talk of a political compromise in Columbus that will consolidate both elections into perhaps a single April primary, as well as a potential voter referendum.
So we’ll stick to what we know, now.
On the March 6 ballot, voters will see candidates for everything from Ohio Supreme Court justice and U.S. Senate, to state central committee.
In Ohio’s closed party primary system, voters may cast ballots only for one party’s candidates: They can pick from among Democratic, Republican, Libertarian or Green. The only other option for voters is to get an issues-only ballot, which won’t contain any candidates, only the issues in your area.
Of 24 locally elected offices on the ballot, only five feature a contested primary:
• Peter Ferguson’s Stark County commissioner seat. He did not seek re-election, so longtime Canton City Councilman Bill Smuckler and Plain Township Trustee Louis Giavasis square off for the Democratic nomination. The winner will face Republican Richard Regula in November.
• Ohio House, 95th District, which includes Carroll County. Charles Daniels, James Drake and William Weekley battle for the Democratic nomination.
• Former Alliance Police Chief Lawrence Dordea, Beach City Police Chief Jim Wood and Canal Fulton Mayor John Grogan on the Republican side for Stark County Sheriff. The winner faces Democrat Michael McDonald in the fall of 2012.
• Fifth District Court of Appeals, where Jeanette Moll takes on Flite H. Freimann for the GOP bid.
• The male representative from the 29th District to the state Democratic Party’s Central Committee, where Canton Mayor William J. Healy II, battles State Rep. Stephen Slesnick and William Smith.
Among new tax requests on ballots are a 2 percent income tax in East Canton, a 30-year bond for construction and renovation of Canton Local Schools and a 4.9-mill additional levy for Canton Township fire service.

Independent candidates who want to enter next year’s November general election against a primary winner have until March 5 to file required paper work. None of the candidates or issues are officially on the ballot until their petitions are approved as valid by county elections boards.
They have 12 days to do that.
