Those exiting Interstate 77 South at Arlington Road may wonder why the left lane offers a right and left turn when there is a designated right-turn only lane. Several accidents have almost occurred from motorists in the right-hand lane turning off the ramp into the left lane on Arlington while cars from the left lane are turning into that lane from the expressway.
Latest traffic counts for the southbound exit ramp indicate about 1,200 right turns and 350 left turns during the afternoon peak hours.
“With the additional traffic during the afternoon rush hours, the additional right turn lane increases the number of vehicles that ramp can hold, which in turn helps reduce backups on the interstate,” said Brent Kovacs, public information specialist with ODOT District 4.
The city of Green plans to make this turn safer by painting dotted lines from the solid white line on the ramp to the lane line on Arlington Road. This line is expected to be painted this summer. The road until the I-77 overpasses will also be repaved.
Spade Road sewer project to bring relief
Relief is coming for the approximately 25 homeowners affected by flooding on Spade Road. Grading will begin at Mayfair Road and run through the yards of several existing homes.
“There is an existing pipe that is inadequate that will be replaced along with grading,” said David Hart, owner of Municipal Service Group, who is overseeing the project.
Construction of the storm sewer is expected to begin Feb.19 and last approximately 45 days depending on weather. Final seeding of grass will not take place until the spring.
“We hope to help elevate storm water issues before the spring rains arrive,” Hart said.
The installation of the storm sewer is not expected to affect traffic on the street.
Development near CAK
More development may soon begin near the Akron Canton Airport as plans for the CAK III/ Port Green project progess. This project extends Global Gateway 1.1 miles from its current stopping point to intersect with Greensburg Road.
“This project opens up approximately 142 acres of developable land,” said Wayne Wiethe, City of Green planning director. “The land is owned by the Akron Canton Airport and they have been supportive of the project.”
Construction of the road and possible development is expected to begin soon.
