Summer Reading Club kicked off at all locations of the Stark County District Library, and now through Aug. 11, readers of all ages can dream big at any library location.

Again this year, the library will offer scratch-off tickets with every check-out of reading material – books, magazines and audiobooks - to encourage patrons to keep reading and to offer instant prizes. Fill out the back of either ticket to be entered into the grand prize drawings at the end of summer.

“Libraries have been holding summer reading clubs and activities for around 100 years,” said Youth Services Coordinator Ann Wetmore. “Research shows that students can lose up to two months of academic progress over the summer months. The goal is to help stop the summer slide and help kids and teens maintain their reading skills during their summer vacations.”

Recent research suggests that reading eight books at grade level over the summer will not only prevent the ‘summer slide,’ it can also improve a child’s reading skills. To help motivate kids to read those eight books, the library is partnering with the Pro Football Hall of Fame for “Get in the Game! Be a Hall of Fame Reader.” Through this program, kids in kindergarten through 12th grade will be eligible for weekly and grand prizes by reading 100 minutes per week.
