Retired Chief Deputy Rick Perez is about to become the township police department’s only reserve police officer.
Police Chief Michael Pomesky confirmed Wednesday morning that Perez is scheduled to start the non-paid position on Thursday.
Pomesky said Perry once had reserve officers, but that practice has been abandoned for some time.
“It’s something I’ve been interested in bringing back,” Pomesky said.
Perez will be the first one, he said.
The reserve officer’s post is a commissioned officer position that functions to serve the general needs of the department. This encompasses everything “from road patrol to special detail. Any level of police work,” Pomesky said.
While the police department does not yet have any other reserve officers, it does boast a regular force of 25 officers.
Perez, 57, retired last month from the Stark County sheriff’s department and was hired recently as the Canton-Stark County Crime Lab Director. He chose earlier this week to step down after it was learned that he has no college degree, which was a previous requirement for the job.
