Police arrested a Stark State College student with a handgun on felony weapons charges Tuesday, Stark County Jail records said.

Fabian A. Butts, 24, of Akron, was arrested at 3:10 p.m. at the college at 6200 Frank Ave. NW, where he was found with a handgun, the jail records said.

He was jailed on felony charges of carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons under disability.

Butts was previously convicted in April 2011 of felony domestic violence and felony endangering children, and placed on community control, Summit County court records show.

He was released from jail after posting a $50,000 bond, the jail records said.

Later Wednesday Stark State issued the following statement:

“We’re very pleased and fortunate that this situation was handled safely and without incident thanks to the quick action of Stark State’s security force and the Jackson Police Department, who were on scene within minutes.

Ohio law currently prohibits firearms on campus and signs reflecting that law are posted at the entrances of all campus buildings.

Stark State’s commissioned campus security officers ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff by enforcing that policy as well as other campus safety/security policies.

In addition to the extensive experience of our commissioned campus security force, the college also has lockdown and other safety/security policies and procedures in place that reflect best practices.”
