The campaign of President Barack Obama kicked off its Made in Ohio manufacturing tour today in Akron with a press conference featuring local labor leaders and Summit County officials at Laborers International Hall.

Taking the podium were William Crooks, executive secretary-treasurer, Tri-County Regional Labor; Sandra Kurt, Summit County councilwoman and an engineer at Goodyear Tire; and Jack Hefner of Maxiom Wheels International.

The “Made in Ohio” manufacturing tour is highlighting the companies, communities, and workers who are back on the right track thanks to the president’s investments into the backbone of Ohio’s economy – its manufacturing sector.

“Our state has an economy built on making things,” Kurt said, pointing to the Chevrolet Cruze, manufactured in Lordstown, Jeeps made in Toledo and tires produced locally.

Kurt noted that Obama’s policies, including tax credits for bringing jobs back from overseas and stiff tariffs on Chinese-made tires.

At Maxiom Wheels, Hefner has seen the policies at work first-hand.

Formerly Hayes Wheels, the company was purchased by Brazil’s Iochpe-Maxion last year.

“Obama’s policies have sparked growth,” he said. “In recent months, we have actually added jobs.”
Crooks said it is important not to return to the policies of the past, noting that taxes on foreign sales have cost more than 800,000 jobs in recent years.

“As the economy grows, it also increases the tax base and it helps everyone,” he said. “A strong middle class is key to the economy.”

Romney brought his fight against Obama to the Buckeye State today, continuing a theme set earlier in the week in Pennsylvania, in which he accused the president of believing the government is more vital to a thriving economy than the nation’s workers and dreamers.
