Stark County commissioners began the process Wednesday of putting a 1.9-mill renewal and 1.4-mill additional levy on the May ballot to fund the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Commissioners asked the Stark County Auditor’s Office to certify how much the proposed 10-year levy issue would generate. After the certification, the board will take the formal step of placing the issue on the May 7 ballot.

Bill Green, superintendent of the Development Disabilities board, said the levy is intended to combine the agency’s two existing levies that are set to expire at the end of 2013 and 2014 and would not increase the cost for taxpayers.

He said the agency needs the levies to continue due to reductions in state funding and lower property values.

By law, commissioners are the taxing agent for the Developmental Disabilities board.
