A robbery suspect who at one point dragged a citizen through a gas station parking lot during his escape was fished from the canal behind Goodyear as he begged for help Saturday.

Ahmad Salti, 52, of Rocky River, was jailed on a robbery charge and unrelated warrants charging him with fraud and driving under suspension, said Inspector William Holland of the Summit County Sheriff’s Department.

Holland said Tuesday that Salti had stolen cartons of cigarettes from the Sheetz gas station/convenience store in Coventry and a Circle K on Massillon Road in Green before heading to the BP at 3171 S. Arlington Rd.

There, he stole two cartons of cigarettes, Holland said.

As Salti tried to leave, a “civilian” reached in through the driver’s window of Salti’s vehicle and grabbed the steering wheel, Holland said.

Salti didn’t stop.

The person who tried to stop him was dragged a short distance before Salti fled north on Arlington, Holland said.

Deputies later spotted Salti on East Exchange Street in Akron.

They were able to stop him, but he ran from his car and toward the canal on River Street, Holland said.

With the deputies still pursuing him, Salti jumped into the canal and then began yelling at the deputies for help, Holland said.

Holland said he was treated by Akron firefighter/paramedics at the scene and then taken to a local hospital.
