Stark jobless rate climbs, matches Ohio at 6.7 percent

Stark County’s jobless rate rose to 6.7 percent in December, matching the state’s average.

The December rate rose from the 6.4-percent rate reported in November but is lower than the 7.9 percent unemployment rate reported in December 2011.

Canton city’s jobless rate rose to 7.6 percent in December, compared with 7.5 percent the previous month and 9.3 percent the previous year.

While the unemployment rate rose, the estimated size of the county’s work force dropped, according to the number collected by the U.S. Labor Department.

Stark County’s December work force slipped to 186,900 people compared with 188,000 people in November, while the Canton work force slipped to 32,700 from 32,900 people.

Among neighboring counties Holmes posted the lowest jobless rate at 4.2 percent, while Wayne came in at 5.5 percent, Summit and Portage at 6.2 percent and Tuscarawas at 6.3 percent. Posting higher rates were Mahoning County at 7.3 percent, Carroll at 7.4 percent and Columbiana at 7.6 percent.
