Preliminary results from an autopsy found no evidence that a woman who died Friday morning in a car-train collision was unresponsive before the crash.

Wiladine “Billy” Van Wert, 85, of Jackson Township, was killed when a Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train struck her car at the Portage Street NW crossing near Whipple Avenue NW.

Stark County Coroner P.S. Murthy completed an autopsy Sunday and said he “found no anatomical abnormality or acute conditions that would suggest Mrs. Van Wert was unresponsive at the time of the crash.”

Murthy said Van Wert suffered fatal injuries to her head, spine and torso.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which happened shortly before noon Friday.

Witnesses said Van Wert was driving east on Portage as the train entered the crossing going south. The collision pushed her car up against a building in the southeast corner of the crossing.
